Thursday 22/02/18 9pm

Neil: fills for eye of the tiger are coming together nicely. Well played to the track, just watch fir the bass drum pattern at the end if the fill in the first time bar. Stay relaxed don't practice to fast and really focus on the way you want the fill to sound.

Ben: check the groove variations on the first page. You are reading them well but the feel still needs to be more thoroughly established. Tighten up the drags on the intro so your fill sounds crisp and in time. Keep thinking "how do I want this to sound?"

Thursday 22/02/18 8.30pm

This week practice the 8ths to 16th note sticking pattern. Try not to pull the strokes when you p,at the 16ths.
Seven nation army was better this week. Now try to focus on the transition between each groove. P,at four bars of one and then a smooth change in to the next.
Especially look at the fill in bar 13 and 14

Thursday 22/02/18 8pm

Warm up:
Flam paradiddles and paradiddlediddle. Start with the mechanics of what you are trying to do. Once you have this then start thinking about your technique, playing clean relaxed doubles, letting the stick rebound enough to get a strong flow to the excercise.

Mohair mountain: up to section C to the track. Again once you are happy with the mechanics of the various grooves and fills, start to develop your technique (think about grip and releasing and tension while you play)

Pop it in the top: start working on the first page to the track. Your goal is a tight pushy feel so not over hitting or tending up will be key to achieving the correct sound and feel for the genre.

Thursday 22/02/18 7pm

Great work on don't say nuthin from last week! You really got inside the feel and sound if the track. Thus week's break is "Chinese Chicken" on P25. Things to focus on: be really careful where the accented and ghosted snare drums are placed. Notice the way the groove is shaped almost the same in bar 2 and 3 and how this affects the feel of the whole phrase.
Use ex 1-7 on page 29 to develop your 16th snare doubles. Watch the hi-hat does not dominate and both snare hits are even but not tense/ forced.
Played it right: intro much better this week. Good relaxed approach, clean and well phrased sound. Now try working the simplified groove (essentially minus the snare ghost notes) into the first verse, again focus on the feel, don't over hit the hi-hat!

Thursday 6pm 22/02/18

Tech study 1: first two bars looking much better. Remember to relax when you play the five stroke roll. Visualise how you want the stick to move and the shape of sound you wish to produce!
Warning: fill in bar better. You are aiming for a smooth triplet feel to this phrase.
The groove at bar 9 has a swung 16th feel. Listen to listen to Steve Jordan on room for squares. "My stupid mouth" and "neon" are great examples of this feel.

Thursday 22/02/18 5.30pm

Good on the Matt McGuire track this week. Work on all the groove changes and fills up to the pre chorus. Use the video of the fills to help you if you a reminder of how it should sound!
Well done thus week Bo, your grip and control have improved massively

Thursday 22/92/18 5pm

Chop Suey: intro and transition fill can now be played to the track.
Focus on the groove at section c for next week. Make sure you play this groove with a crisp 16th not feel not a swung 8th note.
Below is each groove written out:

Thurs 22/02/18 4pm

Accented paradiddles sounding better this week. The mechanics of the phrases are established, now think about your technique, clean relaxed doubles and using up strokes to prep for the accents.
Start using each combination as a half bar fill.
Below is the groove to "wanna be starting something". Use this practice all the different bass double stroke combinations.

Discoveries: the first two bars are sitting well now. Practice playing these together now.

Also work on the last two bars of this groove. Use the video as a reference if you need it!

Also below is the groove to northlane which you played spot on this week. Take your time and aim fir relaxed control over the groove and feel rather than speed!

Odd one out: wirk on the first fill and two bar groove. For next week please

Monday 05/02/18 7pm

Warm up this week: the exercise below is again building on your left foot and hand independence. A simple 3:4 pattern played as 8th notes over a samba foot pattern. Drop into each bar one repetition at time to start. This will help you hear the phrase as well as develop the coordination. Develop by accenting the left hand.

Dark matter: improved from last week. This week focus on bar 17-24. The fills in bar 20 and 22 should be practiced at 80bpm to a click. Watch you don't rush the displaced back beat phrases.

Monday 05/02/18 6pm

Lewis: well played again today!
Rollin: sounding good up to the bass solo to the track. Just each you don't loose tine in the transition into D. Practice the sticking ex for the bass solo focusing on the left foot and keeping the snare notes light and low.
Geek: keep on top of the first page for next week.
Toby: Up to section b was excellent to the track. Now you can play section B start working to the track for next week! Use the groove below to work on the bass solo. You have a nice touch but make sure the feet pattern is secure!
Seb: first part of warning was strong! Just tidy up the last couple of bass drums especially in the first time bar!
First two bars of the technical study much improved keep polishing fir Thursday!

Monday 05/02/18 5pm

Warm up look at figure i) this week. This should help you with the last bar of the first line of the 40 bar exercise. The R RL sticking should be your focus this phrase.

Fall out: first bar everyone played well on the acoustic kit. Take your time and count the rhythm of the phrase as you are trying to play. The second bar you also played well. Really great reading and counting guys!
Your task over half term is to be able to play both bars together!

Monday 05/02/18 4.15 pm

Warm up: good progress with the sheet this week. Now practice ex-9. Try to combine if you can.
Also recap flams. Make sure the mechanics of this rudiment are correct ( the hand playing the grace note should be lower than the hand playing the main note.

For you: practice the first page including the transition at B with the extra hi hat note. We also looked at section C with the four on the floor groove and the fill in bar 8. Make sure you count this fill correctly and start the last three notes with the left hand!

Thurs 01/92/18 7pm

Warm up this week with the 3:4 ex based on the break beat bible ex. Fill in the two single 16rpths with a flam tap sticking. Once it feels comfortable start playing around with your voicings.

Played it right: intro sounding strong this week. Work on the groove exercise below.
Play it to the track and start to work on producing a specific sound and feel with this track. Get inspired! Watch some of your favourite players on you tube!

Thurs 01/02/18 6.30

Kit as five sounding much more fluent this week. Keep working on the left hand comp figures aiming for a light articulate sound. Below is the frame work of the melody of the solo section. Use this to shape the phrases for your solo. Start by just mapping out the figures abs filling in the gaps on the 1:4 or 8th note. Try not to over play. Your aim is for a secure feel if the time, feel and phrases for the solo.

Thurs 01/02/18 6pm

Warm this week 5stroke rolls also the paradiddle groove from tech ex 1. Remember go beyond the sticking. Bass drums should add shape and feel along with the correct snare accents.

Warning: intro to work on. Create a heavy secure feel between the bass drum and floor Tom.
Check out some you tube versions for inspiration.

Thurs 01/02/18 5.30

Good work with the first grooves to "new rules".
This week use the snare drum groove as your warm up. Start slow one rep at a time. Make sure the accents are clear and the unaccented notes have a flow to them.

First fill can be played. Watch out for the last two hi-hats as sometimes they catch you out.
Learn the floor Tom addition for next week.

Also learn the second fill for the first verse before the pre chorus.

Thurs 01/02/18 5pm

Warm up with ex 20 and 21 this week from lesson 11 in sycopation. Again start to push the tempos aiming for relaxed control. When it feels comfortable try voicing around the kit.

Chop Suey: intro groove almost to the track this week. Practice dropping into the groove at the correct tempo (use a metronome if you need to!). Use the exercise below to start developing the coordination for the groove at section B.

Thurs 01/02/18 4.30

Accented paradiddles: paradiddle sticking is looking much more comfortable. Now bring all the notes except for the accents down to 2-3" off the drum.

The fourth bar if the verse groove (B2). Have a look at the bar below. Take care with the figure on beat 2. Focus on the hi hat staying smooth and even while the bass drum plays the 16th note on "e"

Intro sounding really nice. Work on evening out the bass drums in the 4th bar.

Thurs 01/02/18 4pm

Warm: practice the Paradiddle with the accent on the 2nd stroke . Just one rep of the full sticking slowly. Focus on using the mechanics of the up stroke to give you a clean accent.

Below is the groove development for discoveries. Take your time work on and even relaxed feel. Don't speed up or loop until it feels 100% comfortable.
