Have a look at the groove for James brown's funky president. Two things to focus on. Number 1 is that your hi-hat plays even 8th notes all the way through. Number 2 is that the ghost bites are ghosted!

Stick control have a go at the first page. Pick 4-6 ex's loop each one 4 times then go straight on to the next one.
Keep looking at the fill and groove from the track last week. Make sure you are playing heel up bass drum doubles. Below us an exercise to help you get this feeling relaxed and secure! Use it as 1 bar fill to a backing track!

Warm up with ex 13 from syncopation. The sticking for each beat should be R RL and the aim is to get the right hand moving on to the next tom as the left hand plays the last nite of the group.
Have a listen to the intro to come together with the the sextuplet phrases. Remember not grip the stick too tight or hit too hard as you play this. It should be soft even and smooth as you roll over the toms!

Experiment playing each groove hand to hand on the hi-hat and all with the right hand as well. Hear the difference in texture!
Finally have a go at the linear groove (marked track 97). Remember these grooves rely on crisp clean time flow for the 16th notes and accurate internal dynamics.

This week your warm up is a coordination excercise looking at taking the left hand around the kit.
The first one the left hand plays the snare and tom 1 in a 2 beat phrase.
The second one is a more froove based idea with a backbeat on 2 and 4

Warm up this week with 8th s and 16ths around the kit. Keep it controlled but see how fast you can take it!
Y'all: recap the fill in bar 10 watch out for the rests and count carefully. Play the whole transition through to beat 1 of bar 11.
Look at the open hi-hat groove in bar 12. Take care to close the hi-hat in time!

Ex 2 ruffs much better just check your voicing the phrases correctly.
Reggae muffin: dynamics need to be clear and watch you don't rush the solo at the end! Over all a really strong performance well done!
Neil: well played today. The swung rhythms for London calling looked much more secure and confident. Apply the counting to all of the fills and grooves on the first page for next week.

Have a go at ex 1-5 and no 7. Start on the snare then try playing around the kit.
When this feels comfortable try a bar of groove and then use one of the exercises as a fill.
Also have a go at the bass drum variations (first dropping the bass drum on beat 4 then afterward on beat 2)

Warm up: are the two grooves from the break beat bible you played today (1+2)
Space future: first four bars at D. The right hand should lead and play all the snare drums. Don't rush,as you will anticipate and speed up!

Technical work: paradiddle diddle, pattaflafla and ratamacues all need practice.
Also the first two lines of the funk technical study.
Razor Head: groove at bar 81, adjust your bass drum pedal if you need to and practice at 140bpm. Same goes for section e. Be able to play from memory and focus on your right foot and hands being super relaxed. It's the tension that's affecting your coordination

I write sins: good work with first the groove to the track. Below is the first fill into the chorus. Remember to keep your bass drums nice and full sounding. Don't let your right leg tense up and choke on the double bass drums.

Warm up: page 1 of stick control read down the first column 20 bars of each excercise at 120bpm
Keep working on the 5:3 linear phrase from last lesson. Practice grouping and voicing the hand pattern around the kit. TRay starting out in a structured way and then as the pattern starts to become more familiar you can improvise over it.

Warm up: is 16th note patterns over a 1/4 note foot pattern. This is a great independence exercise. Start slow. When it is comfortable start moving the accents around different sounds on the kit.
Toby: focus on the accent pattern for p3 of rolling. You can now play this cleanly with the crash on 1 and with the correct foot pattern.
Seb: tech study 1 first three lines are getting there. Relax your left hand dir the 32nd note doubles. Don't fight it! If it is a little untidy for a week or two that's ok as long as it is relaxed!

Warm up: paradiddle phrasing showed no development from last lesson. It is really important that you practice the technical work that we cover to build a solid foundation for more advanced material.
Listen through to Humans by the killers. Practice counting the bars fir the intro, first verse and chorus. Listen to where the hi-hat parts come in.

Dora and bootsy: over all good progress. Open hi-hats in a) are mostly secure but still need to be spot on everytime!
Practice each fill and transition until you have memorised.
You can all now play the last line of page 2 slowly. Over the next week start bringing it up to tempo.
